When to Send a Press Release – Tips for Small Business Owners

Small business owners are sometimes confused about the use of press releases. Many of them are under the impression that press releases should be reserved for major companies because major companies “have something to say”. But the truth is, as a small business owner, you too have something to say.

Company Achievements & Milestones

Has your small business recently been awarded for its excellent service? Have your employees been recognized for outstanding achievements? Are you coming upon your 5th year in business? These are all excellent reasons to send out press releases.

Seminars & Classes

Perhaps you provide a service many people would love to learn more about. You decide to teach them. You post your upcoming seminar on your website and possibly on your Facebook or Twitter but in order to reach a much wider audience much quicker, you need to send out a press release.  A press release will get your news out there quickly and it will get it to people you never would have known are interested because they are outside of your usual network.

Charity Work

Did your small business recently donate to a worthy cause? Participate in a corporate challenge or in any type of volunteer work? Send out a press release. It’s understandable that you may not want to brag about your company’s good deeds but you also need to consider your brand. People trust businesses that are involved with charities and social causes.

Sales & Discounts

People love sales and discounts. They also love when they suddenly stumble upon a deal online. If your business has a current promotion running, send out a press release. Let the media channels pick it up and spread the word. Your chances of customers finding out about the sale are a lot better than if you just posted the sale on your website.

Press releases are not only picked up by the media, they also rank on search engines so having them out there also helps with your overall SEO and reputation management. Any time your business is linked to information you want potential customers to see, you are strengthening your brand. And press releases are a great way to aid in that process.
